I come across this one from time to time. I tend to reblog it each time because it pretty much hits the nail on the head… For me, anyway.

It’s not special or nice that she dresses differently. She dresses differently because she’s a different person entirely.

Ok. This person missed the point about those two comments entirely. I agree with the two original comments. Her choice of clothing allows me to:

focus on her music
appreciate her beauty without focusing on her body
enjoy seeing what she’ll wear next
have a greater respect for her

Why? Janelle is gorgeous. If she wanted to, she could take off her clothes and sell more records. But she doesn’t.

There are so many young black entertainers that show their asses and she is not one of them. That doesn’t mean that certain ones aren’t talented or beautiful. Her decision to stay fully clothed shows other little black girls that you can be talented, beautiful, and respected without taking off your clothes.

I LOVE Janelle, Lord knows I do, but I do not but her albums because of what she chooses to wear. I love her music and her message. Ms. Monae’s image allows me to take her music even more seriously.

I’m sorry if you don’t find me aesthetically pleasing but I will not apologize for how I look. I am blind in my right eye and therefore I wear a prosthesis. It is very noticeable but at the moment there is nothing I can do about it. I’ve felt ashamed of how I look for as long as I can remember.

Not anymore.
